The city of Blankenberge
This region experienced prehistoric occupation and was occupied in Roman and Gallo-Roman times, of which few traces remain. Not much of the original coastal landscape remains either, the coastline having been highly artificialized.
In the past, people had less free time or simply couldn’t afford a vacation. Tourism at the coast was very limited. It was the inhabitants of Bruges who first discovered the joys of water and the beach. Around 1750, they went sporadically to Blankenberge which gradually became a seaside resort.
The first fishing activities date back to the 11th century. The navy had more than 60 ships in the twelfth century. In the 15th century, a pontoon was built in the vicinity of the lighthouse, a construction that served until the beginning of the 16th century. The fishermen of Blankenberge went in barges which approached the beach. They nevertheless asked for a port at the end of the eleventh century. They had to wait until 1871 for the opening of a navigation channel with a wharf. The fishery declined during the period between the two world wars and disappeared in 1945. The port was destroyed by the Germans. A port for pleasure boats was rebuilt in 1955. The port has undergone two more extensions and currently accommodates 1,000 boats.
