Things to do in Bonn

Bonn sits on both banks of the Rhine, and although it’s not as well-known to tourists as the larger cities of Germany, visitors will find plenty to do here. The famous university, as well as its former role as the seat of the government, transferred to Berlin after reunification.
Lying on both sides of the Rhine, Bonn is a historically and culturally desirable city of Germany. Founded by the Romans around 9 to 13 BCE, the city has since had a very illustrious history.
Bonn is also a very picturesque city and is often referred to as “The Romantic Rhine Gate”. It has a vibrant atmosphere and carries a poignant passion for the arts as well as education, being a well-known university town since the early 19th century. Few tourists know that St. Martin’s Cathedral which stands in the historic center of Bonn stands over the graves of the great Roman legionaries Florentius and Cassius. Nowadays, the cathedral is one of the main architectural attractions of the city. It is an awe-inspiring sight that is made all the more magnificent by its 12th-century cloister and other works of art that have been preserved over the years.
It is a town that has also been shaped by its bustling commercial life, as well as its attractive setting – particularly on the riverside, with its view of the nearby Siebengebirge. Bonn is also famous for being the birthplace of Beethoven, a connection marked by a variety of attractions and events. The most notable of these is BeethovenFest Bonn, a popular classical music festival that runs from mid-September to mid-October.

House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany
Four years after the return of the German capital to Berlin, the first exhibitions of the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or “Haus der Geschichte” opened to record the painful years when Germany was a divided nation.
The museum covers the years from the end of World War II to the fall of the Iron Curtain and the reunification of Germany. It compares life in East and West with photos, films, and artifacts, showing how the two post-war German states evolved.
Exhibits highlight the Berlin Wall, the Berlin Airlift, the Iron Curtain, and Final Reunification. Slightly incongruous, but interesting nonetheless, artifacts from Roman Bonn are displayed on the lower floor of the museum. Some signs are in English, and many are self-explanatory, but the free English audio tour is well worth asking for.
The museum is located on Museumsmeile Museum Mile in Bonn, which was once part of the former West German government district.

Beethoven Haus
Bonn has done much to nurture its ties with Ludwig van Beethoven, one of Germany’s most revered composers. A focal point of “Beethoven City” is the birthplace of the great composer, Beethoven-Haus, where he was born in 1770.
Founded as a museum in 1889, the attraction also has a collection of rare artifacts and documents, a research center including rare recordings, and Chambers Music Hall, which hosts a program of concerts and events on the Beethoven theme. Guided tours are available, and there’s a well-stocked shop selling related items on-site.

Botanical Garden and Poppelsdorf Palace
Botanical Garden Bonn Botanischer Garten Bonn, covering approximately 16 acres and owned and operated by the University of Bonn, can trace its roots back to 1340 when it was built as part of a castle garden. They were transformed into their current Baroque style in 1720, and the Rococo Palace Poppelsdorf was added in 1746.
Today, the garden is home to over 11,000 species of plants, including many endangered local species. Highlights of its outdoor gardens include many species of woody plants in the large arboretum, as well as plants organized by geographic region. Guided tours and educational lectures are available.

Minister of Bonn
The much-admired Bonn Bonner Münster Cathedral is dedicated to Saints Cassius and Florentine, who is said to have been executed on this site. It is considered one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches on the Rhine. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, it is also one of the oldest cathedrals in Germany.
Highlights include its 11th-century east crypt, attractive 12th-century cloister, and unique crossing tower.
As engineers and archaeologists assessed structural needs for major renovations in 2017, they discovered the long-forgotten tomb of Siegfried von Westerburg behind a slate panel in the west crypt. Bonn is right to the township.
